Family Bereavement Program
A primary program of Walla Walla Community Hospice is to provide grief and bereavement support to the
families of our patients. WWCH social workers continue to have regular contact with the families for
one year following the death of a patient. The nature and frequency of these contacts may vary, depending
on the needs of the family.
One on One
One on One is an individual grief support program that is offered free of charge to members of the community,
even if the loved one that has died was not a Hospice patient. The program is designed to meet special
bereavement needs through one on one counseling. One on One provides for up to four visits with a WWCH social
worker. One on One is a positive, short term approach to help deal with the loss of a loved one.
Grief Support Groups
Walla Walla Community Hospice offers grief support groups several times throughout the year. Like the One on
One program, the groups are free and open to any member of the community. Participants learn about the nature
of grief, how to cope with it, and how to successfully move through it. This occurs in an atmosphere of safety
and support, among friends who genuinely encourage one another to acknowledge and work through their emotions.
Some groups are designed with a special focus, such as groups for those who have lost a child, those who
have lost a spouse, or getting through the holidays. The groups meet in a private setting for 1 1/2 hours
per week for eight weeks. The WWCH bereavement team (social workers and chaplain) facilitate the groups,
which usually include 8-12 people. The book "Understanding Grief – Helping Yourself Heal" by Dr.
Allan Wolfelt is used as a guideline for the groups.
